About Us
A Leading Laboratory in Physics
PhLAM (UMR 8523 – Physics of Lasers, Atoms, and Molecules) is a joint research unit under the joint supervision of the CNRS and the University of Lille. Founded in 1998, it builds on a tradition in Lille spanning more than sixty years in the study of light–matter interactions.
Today, the laboratory is recognized for the excellence of its research, as evidenced by high-impact international publications, prestigious collaborations, and national and international scientific awards.
Cutting-edge research in modern physics
PhLAM’s research covers a wide range of topics:
- Experimental and theoretical molecular physics
- Dynamics of complex systems
- Photonics
- Quantum systems
At the intersection of several disciplines (chemistry, mathematics, engineering, environmental and astrophysical sciences, biology, medicine, and materials science), the laboratory conducts both fundamental and applied research.
A robust structure and strong institutional roots
PhLAM includes more than 170 members organized into five research teams, supported by an administrative division and an engineering and technology division.
It draws on two technology platforms accredited by the University of Lille:
- FiberTech Lille, spun off from the Photonics team
- CERLA (Center for Laser Studies and Research and Applications), of which PhLAM is a founding member
At the local level, the laboratory is a major player in the University of Lille’s Initiative of Excellence and participates in several collaborative structures, notably:
- ITES (Institute for Environmental and Social Transitions)
- IRCICA (Research Institute on Software and Hardware Components for Advanced Information and Communication)
Its members are also heavily involved in numerous national and international networks, research groups, and collaborative projects.
Valorisation, Partnerships, and Socio-Economic Impact
The balance between basic research and applications is a key focus of PhLAM. The laboratory fosters close collaborations with industrial partners and actively promotes the commercialization of its research findings through affiliated laboratories, invention disclosures, and technology transfers.
Education and Science Outreach
PhLAM places a strong emphasis on the integration of education and research. Its members are deeply committed to teaching at all levels (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees) and contribute to the University of Lille’s international appeal.
The laboratory is also engaged in science outreach: public lectures, visits for high school students, participation in the Xperium, audiovisual productions, and initiatives to disseminate knowledge.
