Le développement de fibres optiques disposant de fonctionnalités originales devient une nécessité afin d’améliorer les dispositifs photoniques actuels et d’étendre leur champ d’application.

L’activité « modélisation de fibres avancées » répond à cette attente dans plusieurs domaines qui présentent à l’heure actuelle un enjeu majeur pour notre société moderne : 

  • Transport, déport de fortes puissances, lasers fibrés (découpe laser, marquage, chirurgie, …) 
  • Mise en forme et filtrage spatial (Laser MJ, CEA CESTA) 
  • Contrôle des effets non-linéaires et génération de sources large spectre (sources blanches puissantes)  Communications multimodes haut débit

La recherche qui y est développée s’appuie avant tout sur la modélisation et la compréhension fine des mécanismes de guidage dans les fibres microstructurées et à Bandes Interdites Photoniques (BIP). Le groupe a pour cela développé ses propres outils de modélisation (amplification et propagation multimode, codes de développement en ondes planes) ou utilise des outils commerciaux (éléments finis) afin d’en comprendre les aspects plus fondamentaux. Les études restent cependant en lien direct avec la technologie développée dans la centrale technologique de l’IRCICA pour donner des solutions viables et réalistes.
