3) Laser applications in biology and medicine

The group’s expertise in laser-assisted mass spectrometry analysis and technological developments brought a decisive contribution to the implementation of resonant laser micro-ablation techniques and laser desorption/ionization schemes specifically adapted for biological tissues. This is illustrated by the team’s contribution to the development of the SpiderMass instrument and by the fact that eminent toxicologists now turn to our detection capabilities to assess the migration and transformation of harmful organics in cell tissues. Laser-assisted mass spectrometry for molecular characterization and micro-scale imagining has great valorization potential, with possible technology transfer from the academy to the business sector, the development of science-industry links and sponsored collaborative research, and ultimately into value added and job creation.
