WHO ARE WE?

A leading physics laboratory

PhLAM (UMR 8523 – Laser, Atom and Molecule Physics) is a joint research unit under the dual supervision of the CNRS and the University of Lille. Created in 1998, it is part of a tradition in Lille dating back more than sixty years in the study of light-matter interactions.

Today, the laboratory is recognized for the excellence of its research, as evidenced by high-level international publications, prestigious collaborations, and national and international scientific awards.

Cutting-edge research in modern physics

PhLAM's work covers a wide range of topics:

  • Experimental and theoretical molecular physics
  • Dynamics of complex systems
  • Photonics
  • Quantum systems

At the interface of several disciplines (chemistry, mathematics, engineering, environmental and space sciences, biology, medicine, materials science), the laboratory conducts both fundamental and applied research.

A solid structure and strong institutional roots

PhLAM has more than 170 members divided into five research teams, supported by an administrative center and an engineering and technology center.

It relies on two technology platforms certified by the University of Lille:

  • FiberTech Lille, created by the Photonics team
  • CERLA (Center for Laser Studies and Applications), of which PhLAM is a founder.

At the local level, the laboratory is a major player in the University of Lille's Initiative of Excellence and participates in several federative structures, including:

  • ITES (Institute for Environmental and Social Transitions)
  • IRCICA (Institute for Research on Software and Hardware Components for Advanced Information and Communication)

Its members are also heavily involved in numerous networks, research groups, and national and international collaborative projects.

Valorization, partnerships, and socio-economic impact

The balance between fundamental research and applications is a key focus of PhLAM. The laboratory develops close collaborations with industrial partners and actively promotes its results through approved laboratories, invention disclosures, and knowledge transfer.

Training and scientific outreach

PhLAM considers the link between training and research to be a major challenge. Its members are heavily involved in teaching at all levels (BUT, bachelor's, master's, doctorate) and contribute to the international appeal of the University of Lille.

The laboratory is also involved in scientific outreach: conferences for the general public, visits for high school students, participation in Xperium, audiovisual productions, and knowledge dissemination activities.

The PhLAM laboratory had 175 employees as of January 1, 2026. The laboratory's members, including researchers, teacher-researchers, and administrative and technical staff, enjoy working together and share a common passion for research.
