As part of Guillaume Vanderhaegen's thesis work and an international collaboration involving groups from all over the world (Australia, Italy, France), the PhLAM laboratory published an article in the prestigious journal PNAS (Proceedings of the Nationnal Academy of Sciences of the United States of America) on one of the surprising and as yet unknown characteristics of modulation instability: the observation of gain outside the conventional gain band. We have carried out experimental demonstrations in very different fields of physics (optics and hydrodynamics) to highlight the universal aspect of the process.
